Netflix US will stream the hit Starz series Spartacus in its entirety starting later in September 2025 in the United States. We’ve got confirmation today that the series is returning to the service after a five-year absence.
Created by Steven S. DeKnight and Sam Raimi, the hit historical drama series ran on Starz for 39 episodes in total between 2010 and 2013. The series loosely follows the story of the historical Thracian gladiator who led a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Over the course of its four seasons, the show evolves from a personal story of vengeance to a full-scale war.
The series featured the talents of Andy Whitfield, John Hannah, Manu Bennett, Erin Cummings, Lucy Lawless, and Peter Mensah.
All four seasons are expected to land on Netflix again beginning September 22nd, 2025, with that including the prequel series dubbed Gods of the Arena. The length of time it’ll be licensed to Netflix is unclear at this time.
As mentioned, it’s been a while since Spartacus was available to stream on Netflix. The streamer first landed the rights in February 2015 in the United States for a five-year stint that eventually saw all four seasons leave on February 1st, 2020. Since then, the series has largely been exclusive to Starz and its streaming service in the United States, with some other services carrying it for limited periods, such as AVOD providers and a stint on Hulu.
The return to Netflix comes at a time when Lionsgate Television has been licensing a bunch of shows to Netflix over the summer. The most prominent has been The Hunting Wives, which jumped from Starz for an exclusive release on Netflix US. We’ve also seen Heels licensed to Netflix, Black Sails, P-Valley, and Hightown licensed in select regions, including the US.
Of course, the timing plays into the hands of Starz, given that a new revival/sequel series has been in the works for the last few years and is coming soon. That new mini-series sees Steven DeKnight returning to showrun with a cast that includes Graham McTavish, Tenika Davis, Ivana Baquero, Jamaica Vaughan, Jordi Webber, Claudia Black, India Shaw-Smith, Cameron Rhodes, and Leigh Gill.
It was initially set for a Fall 2025 release, but has been pushed back to Winter. The synopsis for Spartacus: House of Ashur reads, “The story is based on the assumption that Ashur did not die on Vesuvius in the denouement of the second season of the original fiction.”
