GTA 6 Pushed to May 2026: Rockstar Issues Apology for Delay
Rockstar Games has officially rescheduled the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, now targeting a launch date of May 26, 2026, shifting from its originally expected fall 2025 debut.
In a public update, the studio expressed regret over the postponement, acknowledging the high anticipation surrounding the game — which many predict will be one of the largest entertainment events ever.
“We know this news is later than fans hoped,” Rockstar shared. “The overwhelming enthusiasm for the next Grand Theft Auto means a lot to us. We're sincerely grateful for your continued support and patience as we finish development.”
They emphasized their ongoing goal of delivering exceptional experiences with each release: “Our aim has always been to surpass expectations, and GTA VI is no different. This extra time will help ensure we deliver the quality you deserve. We’ll have more to share soon.”
While the announcement confirms the game's new launch date, it notably lacked any fresh footage or details. As a result, fans are still eagerly awaiting the second trailer. Additionally, Rockstar has yet to confirm which platforms GTA VI will arrive on, sparking speculation that a PC version could launch alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick also weighed in during a financial update on May 2, showing full support for Rockstar’s decision to delay: “We’re committed to giving our teams the time they need to bring their creative visions to life. GTA VI is poised to redefine blockbuster entertainment.”
Zelnick reassured stakeholders that the company remains focused on excellence and expects long-term growth from its future releases, despite the shift in schedule.
This delay could shake up the release calendar for late 2025, giving other titles — like Borderlands 4, Battlefield, Marathon, and Ghost of Yotei — more room to capture attention. Nintendo, preparing to roll out the rumored Switch 2, may also benefit from the breathing room.
On the flip side, developers who aimed to avoid clashing with GTA VI’s original fall 2025 window may need to revisit their launch plans — especially those eyeing spring 2026.
